The Nason's Corner Community Park Project Blossoms at the Portland Flower Show

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth at the Flower Show. We were heartened by enthusiasm for the project and generous offers of support – financial, in-kind donations, and hands-on work. We are happy to know that so many understand the importance of getting children outside in natural play environments and we enjoyed watching children play with our interactive model of the project created by Breakwater School Early Childhood and early Elementary Director Molly Thompson.

Congratulations to the three winners in our “Guess the Number of Stones” contest:

Christa Seaman, Woolwich (148)
Suzanne Dargie, Falmouth (156)
Shirley Helfrich, Portland (157)

Area Girl Scouts Lend their Hand in Support of Nason’s Corner Community Park.

Promoting community awareness for the redesign of their neighborhood park, local Junior Girl Scout troop 1976 will be holding service learning activities on the Breakwater School grounds (adjacent to the park) on Saturday, May 26, 2011. Potential activities include a Bottle Drive and a community Yard Sale.

The Middle School-aged Girl Scout’s involved all live and attend nearby public and independent schools. Troop Leader Dona Pfeffer said, “The girls are so excited to be aiding a project they can directly see the benefits of; enhancements to the park they’ve grown up playing in!”

$85,000 Grant Launches Greening Project
Thursday, March 26, 2009

An $85,000 foundation grant has been awarded for the “greenovation” of Nason’s Corner Park, a popular Portland destination for walking, t-ball, Little League, youth football, ice-skating and playground play. The design plan includes City park and Breakwater playground areas that are shared as open space by the community and school. It retains the open sports fields, but adds trees, gardens, hills, boulders, seating, walking paths, parking improvements and many natural play features as well as equipment. The public-private collaborative working on the project, led by Breakwater School, includes the City of Portland Department of Public Services, Nason's Corner Neighborhood Association, Portland Trails School Ground Greening Coalition, and the New England Environmental Finance Center housed at Muskie School of Public Service.
